Rad Racer Rad Racer Rad Racer Rad Racer

As the last traces of color leave the sky you're hanging out by your new wheels, anxious for the race to start. Transamerica - from the West Coast to the East Coast. Okay. It's time. You jump into the driver's seat, feeling the awesome power beneath you. Stepping through the gears, the cars around you fade into tiny specks in the rear view mirror.

Look out! You're on top of a hairpin curve. Whoa. The tires screech and your heart hits your rib cage, but you make it, laughing. There's only a few more of these 'till you reach the plains.

Then it happens. Another curve hits you in the face. It's too fast. You struggle for the shoulder, but the next thing you know you're catapulting through the air - almost weightless - until your body tears up against the seat belt. Then. All is still.

Not a scratch on you. And the protective ceramic overcoating on your car did the trick - no major damage. You let out a scream, turn the car around, and hit it. There's still time. But you've got to be cool. Alert. You're headed straight for the coast and those glorious checkered flags. Defying the odds again.

The challenge in Rad Racer what should it be;) is to race around a course, and make it to check points before the gas runs out.
If a player hits another car, road sign or tree at a high speed, the car crashes. Crashes take time and so its more difficult to reach the check point.

There are eight different levels of requiring increasing skill. The eight tracks are as follows:

  • Stage 1 - Sunset Coastline (probably California or Hawaii)
  • Stage 2 - San Francisco Highway
  • Stage 3 - Grand Canyon
  • Stage 4 - Ruins of Athens
  • Stage 5 - Los Angeles Night Way
  • Stage 6 - Snow White Line (a course through the Rocky Mountains)
  • Stage 7 - Seaway in Typhoon (Japan)
  • Stage 8 - Last Seaside Running (Florida)
Rad Racer came packaged with 3D glasses. I remember playing that game on B/W TV. So in 3-D mode there was nothing 3-D only a really worse picture.

The cars

At the car selection screen, the player can pick one of two cars: a Ferrari 328 or an F1 racing machine, similar in appearance to the 1987 Camel-sponsored Honda/Lotus 99T Formula 1 car. If the player selects the F1 racing machine, the computer-controlled cars will also drive one in all stages. The default computer-controlled cars are as follows:

  • Stage 1 - Volkswagen Beetle
  • Stage 2 - Chevrolet Corvette
  • Stage 3 - Citroën BX
  • Stage 4 - Mercedes-Benz
  • Stage 5 - Lamborghini Countach
  • Stage 6 - Lotus Esprit
  • Stage 7 - Porsche 911
  • Stage 8 - Ferrari Testarossa
There seems no difference in performance between the F1 racing machine and Ferrari 328.
The maximum speed is still 255 km/h.
